EPPS Rosetta Epps, 58, died Wednes- Former Bath sheriff, Celtics player dies Dan Swartz, a field representative for U.S. Rep. Scotty Baesler and a former Bath County sheriff, died yesterday, apparently of a heart attack. He was perhaps best in his younger days as "Dangerous Dan" because of his talent on the basketball court, Mr. Swartz, who was 65, lived in Olympia.

He was pronounced dead at Mary Chiles Hospital in Mount Sterling. He had been a field representative for Baesler for the last several years. Mr. Swartz was Bath County sheriff during the late 1970s and early 1980s. During the 1950s, he was a twotime basketball All American at what is now Morehead State University.

Mr. Swartz went on to play for the Boston Celtics, and was a member of Celtics world championship teams in the 1960s. He also played on other professional teams. Mr. Swartz, a Bath County native, also had been an outstanding player on the Owingsville High School basketball team.

"I think he got homesick and went back home to play for Morehead," said former UK All-American and Boston Celtics player Frank Ramsey of Madisonville. "He was a great player. He came to UK and was doing well and just got homesick." Ramsey said that Mr. Swartz, who was only about 6-foot-4, wasn't big for a forward, but he was a tough individual.

Mr. Swartz was a member of the Morehead State University Athletic Hall of Fame. "He was a wonderful person. He was a true Kentuckian," Ramsey said. Mr.

Swartz is survived by his wife, Peggy Swartz; four sons, Scott Swartz and Mike Swartz, both of Owingsville, Mark Swartz of Winchester, and Chris Swartz of Fort Wright; a daughter, Tamie Cameron of Winchester; a sister; seven brothers; and seven grandchildren. Former Magoffin sheriff Ben Patrick dies HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT Former Magoffin County Sheriff Ben Edward Patrick died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at Paul Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville. He was 66. Mr.

Patrick, a Republican, was sheriff from 1960 to 1961, filling an unexpired term, and again from 1974 to 1978. He also had been a pipe fitter, welder and farmer. He was a Magoffin County native and served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Saly: ersville.

He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Besides his mother, survivors include three sons, John, Kevin and Jack Howard Grigsby; a daughter, Tina Grigsby Wagoner; six grandchildren; a sister, Charlene Rayburn; and a brother, Charles Stinnett. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Effie Grigsby and Ruby Nevius. Funeral services will be private.

Porter was born March 8, 1922 in Lexington to the late Louis and Nancy Dawson. She departed this life Wednesday, April 2, 1997. She was a devoted member of Main Street Baptist Church. She attended the Lexington Public Schools, graduating from Dunbar High School. After many years of service, she retired from the Lexington Bluegrass Signal Depot.

During her years of retirement she was employed part-time by McAlpin's. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving daughter, Nancy (Robert) P. He graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and also received 4 letters as center on the university's football team. He served as a commercial artist on the Minneapolis Tribune, he had a commercial art studio and in 1961 bought High Croft Farm in Lexington. He bred, owned and raced Thoroughbred horses and did commissioned Thoroughbred paintings for clients. One of his best known local paintings was that of the Old Union Railway Station. He was a member of the Episcopal church, Beta Theta Phi Fraternity, Thoroughbred Club of America, The Keeneland Club, and was a Kentucky Colonel.

During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy Seebees. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynne and Dr. John Mathias, Houston, TX, Roxanne Martin, Lexington; a son and a daughter-in-law, John and Elizabeth Martin, Madison, AL; one sister, Elaine Buck, San Diego, CA; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie Mathias, Dallas, Mrs Kevin (Emily) Frevert, Jackson, TN, Stephen Martin and Kathy Martin, both of Madison, AL. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Grover Martin.
