The room has many special details, but two to call out are the wood-paneled tray ceiling that mirrors the white oak floors and the tile-backed appliance garage with pocket doors and wire mesh inserts.

A multifunctional island with a part-stone, part-butcher block countertop anchors this open-plan kitchen by Los Angeles’ SCW/D Studio. A dining bench covered in a subtly colorful geometric pattern is built into the side, facing the adjacent family room. In conjunction with a tulip-shaped cafe table, it offers a comfy, compact spot for casual meals. Next to the range wall, which is clad in what looks like creamy white brick, a doorway leads to a bar and scullery.

This suburban Minneapolis kitchen by Vintage Elements has at least five different rustic wood elements incorporated in its design: dark wood lower cabinets, a knotty wood band around the range hood, wood floors, a vertical wood-paneled accent wall and a live-edge wood bar on the island. The clean lines and color palette and the chandeliers and sconces ensure that the overall vibe is more modern than homespun.

7. Around the Bend
A large, curved island with a thick countertop and substantial charcoal base adds drama to this suburban Denver kitchen by Sienna Custom Homes. Three pendant lights suspended from the tray ceiling echo the countertop’s half-moon shape and bold veining.

6. Shiplap Shape
A portion of the kitchen in this Dewey Beach, Delaware, home renovated by CRx has a cathedral ceiling that makes the large room feel doubly spacious. Extending the shiplap onto the ceiling and painting it, the range hood and the upper cabinets a crisp white enhances the airy feel. Four pendant lights hang symmetrically from the ceiling instead of over the island, an attractive solution to dealing with an offset island.

5. Reveal and Conceal
This Natick, Massachusetts, kitchen by JMH Designs pairs ivory cabinets and creamy marbled stone with a rich, dark wood island base for a sophisticated two-tone look. The same dark wood repeats on the hood trim and interior of the appliance cabinet, as well as in the bar area on the opposite side of the island. A mix of woven, silver, black and gold accents adds depth and visual interest.

Pairing white upper cabinets with blue lower cabinets is a popular choice among renovating homeowners. This lovely Orange County, California, kitchen by illustrates why. The rustic beams, woven counter stools, cream herringbone-pattern backsplash and golden pendant lights add warmth to the crisp color scheme.

Built by PureHaven Homes in the shadow of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, this contemporary kitchen is made up of earthy colors and materials that mirror those in the surrounding landscape. The view is spectacular for those seated at the narrow bar, which is spliced into one of the kitchen’s two islands.

Jordan Design-Build Group outfitted this Washington, D.C.-area kitchen with honed Glorious White marble countertops, white Shaker-style cabinets and a stained cherry island base, then accessorized it with brushed brass cabinet hardware and other accents. The marble tile backsplash ties together the kitchen’s various neutral tones, and its basketweave pattern adds subtle texture and movement.

1. Pretty and Pale
A pale wood, white and light gray color scheme gives this Washington, D.C.-area kitchen by Reverie Building a Scandinavian summerhouse feel. The upper cabinets are stacked two high to kiss the shiplap-covered ceiling, and the tower of wood-tone cabinets to the left of the range near the dining table has a wine fridge on the bottom.
